Empty tomb
The main Christian Shrine – the Tomb of Christ (the Edicule), walled chapel, built in 1119. During its existence, the chapel many times changed and rebuilt. Before our time preserved the Greek building architect to restore the Church of the Resurrection after the fire in 1808.
Above the entrance to the Tomb images of the resurrection of Christ from three different churches: Roman Catholic, Armenian and Greek – Orthodox. Above the tomb is the add-in the Byzantine style.
The entrance in half of human growth takes You from the Chapel of the angel (first room) in the Tomb of Christ. The place is fully consistent with the layout of ancient tombs, which were discovered near the Temple. It is believed that the burial place of Christ was defined by huge round stone, which was pushed to the entrance to the tomb. According to legend, the tomb was hollowed in the rock. The stone was broken and stolen. Remained a fragment, which can now be seen in the Chapel of the angel.
Under the Emperor Constantine the rock around the Tomb of Jesus was cut down, and now the Tomb looks like a hill on a flat basis.
The Edicule is certainly one of the most popular places of worship for Christians throughout the world.
Accessible during opening hours of Church of the Resurrection. In the days of Christian holidays possibly large crowds and long queue.
